The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi

The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, a unique sample of monastery architecture of the island, is located just 4,080 meters from the center of Poros (Heroes Square). It dates back to the 18th century and it is built on a hill.  It takes its name from the only source of the island which, according to tradition, is known for its healing properties. The wooden temple of the monastery was painted in Cappadocia (Asia Minor) in the 17th century. In the monastery you will also see the painting of the Zoodochos Pigi (=Life Giving Fountain), which was painted around 1850 by the Italian painter Raphael Ceccoli. It is said that the painter came to the monastery with his sick daughter, who finally died and was buried in the churchyard. Her grave is still there today. Then Ceccoli painted the Virgin and gave her the sweet and beautiful figure of his beloved daughter.
